Description
Functional Technique is an longstanding Osteopathic Manual Therapy treatment that utilizes a specific diagnostic system to identify key lesions, and then utilizes the inherent corrective forces of the patient’s body to “dissolve” the lesions and restore normal mobility to the structure. The structure in lesion is precisely positioned away from the barrier to effect a release and an improvement in mobility into the previous barrier. This technique is often described as a “dance” with the patient’s body as the actual treatment process looks fairly effortless to the observer and the patient alike. The patient typically realizes an immediate improvement in mobility and is amazed at how easy the change occurred. Specific evaluation techniques will be utilized for the Spine, Pelvis, and Thoracic Cage. Spinal Biomechanics will be taught in a traditional Osteopathic Methodology. Various techniques for liberation of the lesions will be instructed in the tradition of Hoover, McLaughlin, Stiles, and Still.
These techniques are particularly “body friendly” for both the patient and manual therapist alike in that there are no heavy forces utilized. Massage Therapists and PTs will value these techniques as it gives them a way to practice positional release of specific spinal structures without “directly” mobilizing it. These techniques are useful for manual therapists that want to extend their longevity in practice and not beat themselves up any longer.
